Medical Camp

We organise regular medical camps
with German doctors

PLEASE HELP US TO OFFER MEDICAL SERVICES FOR THE POOREST OF THE POOR

Over the last few years we have organised many medical camps with doctors from Germany. During their stay they offer children and other people in need access to basic medical services and treatments, as these are typically unavailable because of the poor infrastructure or for financial reasons.

Background

Ladakh is a remote, very poorly accessible Himalaya region in India. It is therefore extremely difficult for seriously ill and disabled patients to travel to Delhi or another large city to receive appropriate treatment. In many cases, particularly for those who need reconstructive plastic surgery, the medical costs are practically impossible to pay. The result is that many simply have no choice but to suffer in silence. There are, for example, many cases of serious burns, deformities and cleft palates here. In the remote villages of Ladakh, many people have had no other choice but to live with illness or disability.

Medical Camp

Costs of treatment in hospitals are unaffordable and the treacherous and dangerous roads and the great distances in the Himalaya region are a further hurdle. There is also the social stigma in Ladakh which also contributes to the unspeakable suffering of patients.

The mission was started by the monastery community of Tserkarmo to support people and families who suffer helplessly. Since 2012, a team of highly specialised doctors has been invited to take part in the camp in the nearby city of Leh, providing free medical services in the Mahobodhi hospital every year in summer. The objective is to offer disadvantaged patients the best possible treatment for all kinds of medical conditions.

All patients are incredibly happy and thankful that the free medical care camps offer treatments, medicines, care and accommodation. Over 1,000 patients including many children have been examined and treated with the greatest of love and care by the specialists, and this now even includes preventive screenings.

For us to continue to offer the patients such camps and sustainable practice for the relief of illnesses and disabilities, it is critical that we keep our supporters and donors fully informed of all aspects of the project. This unique programme initiated by the young monks and led by Lama Konchok Samten in Ladakh and Germany is immensely important and must continue.
