Nalanda School & Orphanage

We are building a school with
adjoining orphanage

BOARDING SCHOOL FOR CHILDREN AND ORPHANS FROM THE REMOTE REGIONS OF THE HIMALAYAS

Construction of the school and library, accommodation and canteen commenced in 2019. Ground was broken in a ritual ceremony by His Holiness Kyabgon Chetsang Rinpoche in the summer of 2016.

The Nalanda School & Orphanage will be a boarding school located centrally within the Ladakh region, offering free school education and long-stay accommodation for orphans and children from the disadvantaged villages of the Himalayas. The building land was made available in 2013 by the village community of Saboo. The site lies at the edge of the village, between two mountain ranges close to Leh, the capital of Ladakh.

Nalanda Schule

For Ladakh children, a good education is expensive, and for orphans it is unachievable. The construction of this school to provide a modern upbringing whilst preserving the traditional values of Ladakh is the heart’s desire for the members of our association. This is where schoolchildren will receive a general education in the Ladakh language, but also be instructed about their own culture and Buddhist ethics.

The school will offer classrooms, accommodation and a canteen for 200 children plus a public library which will preserve traditional writings from the Himalayas and provide a general platform for the exchange of ideas.

The buildings are planned to be in contemporary construction with a large proportion of local materials. We want to be energy-efficient, sustainable and high-specification in order to ensure the buildings are durable for long-term utilisation.

Our project is intended to send the children on their way to an independent future with a strong educational foundation.
